Baloney Detection Kit

Interesting video inspired by Carl Segan’s Baloney Detection Kit.
Very well put together, good examples used to illustrate points.

I plan to take each point, further expanded by the content of the video,  and then explain my view of faith. I think it is very important to think through our ideas of faith and see how they stand up to criticism and skepticism.

If your faith can’t hold up to that, are you really believing anything?

Here’s the list:
Point 1. How reliable is the source of the claim?
Point 2. Does the source make similar claims?
Point 3. Have the claims been verified by someone else?
Point 4. Does this fit with the way the world works?
Point 5. Has anyone tried to disprove this claim?
Point 6. Where does the preponderance of evidence point?
Point 7. Is the claimant playing by the rules of science?
Point 8. Is the claimant providing positive evidence?
Point 9. Does the new theory account for as many phenomena as the old theory?
Point 10. Are personal beliefs driving the claim?

What’s this then?

I've had a strange relationship with faith for as long as I can remember. My journey has gone from doing what I was told, to questioning, to doubting, to abandon, to wonder, to play along, to work against, to open up, to change, to embrace, to wonder, to doubt, to work towards, and to keep searching for better answers. Our various understandings of faith are deeply personal. Sharing those understandings can be very helpful to ourselves as well as others.
